Exercise for Senior Dogs

Exercise for Senior Dogs

Like humans, dog age requires a change in an exercise routine. The great news is that just because a dog is older doesn’t mean it cannot enjoy regular exercise. They still need exercise more than you’d think! Below are some tips on making the most out of exercising your senior dog.

  1. Low-impact exercises are best. We want to mention that arthritis is common in senior dogs. Therefore, low-impact exercises like swimming and walking are perfect for dogs with mobility issues. Do not partake in activities requiring your senior dog to jump, which can cause injury.
  2. Go at your dog’s speed. It takes time for dogs to get used to new routines. Take it slow by paying attention to your senior dog’s progress. You can increase the activity over time if they are adapting well.
  3. Walk around the neighborhood. Remember that exercise is mental as well as physical. Allow your senior dog to sniff its surroundings while enjoying a low-impact stroll.
  4. Consistency is critical. Keep track of the amount of intensity your dog gets each day. If they are only used to a 15-minute walk, it would not be best to advance to a 30-minute walk. Work your way up while paying attention to limitations.

Your senior dog will adapt well to its new routine if you follow our tips. It would also be beneficial to consult your veterinarian for additional ideas on increasing your dog’s activity. Once again, take it slow and go at your dog’s pace. Patience will work wonders!
