Elevator Etiquette for Dogs

Elevator Etiquette for Dogs

Elevators can be very confusing to our four-legged friends, especially when they are introduced to them for the first time. Think about it. You walk into an elevator, and there are a lot of scents, sounds, and movements. Enclosed spaces like elevators put us near other people. Dogs may get stressed and anxious during elevator rides, but there are things that you can do as a pet parent to help! Continue reading to learn more about elevator etiquette for dogs.

The first thing you must do is introduce your dog to the elevator. Implement a toy or treat and have your dog focus on it. Give them their treat or toy when the elevator moves. With proper training, it shouldn’t take your dog too long to get familiar and comfortable with the elevator.

Now you must focus on etiquette while riding in the elevator with other people or dogs. While waiting for an elevator door to open, do not allow your dog to stand close to the door. This is because you never know if another dog is on the other side of the door. This can be a recipe for disaster! Do not allow your dog to rush off-leash into an elevator, either. Walking slowly toward the elevator is your best bet.

Teach your dog to one of the corners of the elevator and have them sit by your side. Only allow your dog to interact with people in the elevator if you are familiar with the other person or dog. Your dog may not like sharing a small space with another dog. If so, politely tell the owner you will wait for the next elevator.

You may discover that your dog continues to struggle with elevator rides. If this happens, you may need to seek help from a trainer to address this behavior. However, we are confident that with a lot of patience and consistency, your dog will eventually have excellent elevator etiquette!
