Dogs Rolling Around on the Ground: It’s More Common Than You’d Think!

Have you ever watched your dog or another dog stop in its tracks and roll around on the ground? This may be more common than you’d think!

It is not unusual to see dogs rolling around on the ground, and there are many reasons why they do so. If you allow your dog to roll around the grass or dirt at leisure, they will take advantage of it! At this point, you may wonder why dogs partake in this behavior in the first place. Check out our list below, and you may be surprised at the reasons behind it!

Get Rid of Dead Hair – We know dogs shed much hair. As that hair becomes loose, it may feel uncomfortable for the dog. Dogs may roll around on the ground to loosen dead hair, speeding up the shedding process!

Story Time – Dogs use their sense of smell to gather information and tell a story. Dogs may roll around on the ground and use their scent to convey information to other dogs or animals. For example, your dog may think, “There was a cat around here the other day!”

It’s All About Smell – Dogs love to change their body scent, especially if they do not enjoy the smell on them (after a bath). You may find this surprising, but some dogs prefer the smell of dog pee over certain bath products. Hmmm.

Eliminate Irritation – Dogs may roll around on the ground to relieve an itch or other irritation. Ensure that you are checking your dog for fleas regularly!

As you can see, there are many reasons why your four-legged friend may want to roll around on the ground! Once again, this is normal behavior for a dog and can provide them with lots of physical and mental stimulation. Pay attention to the surroundings. If the grass is wet or there is a mound of dirt or mud that your dog is trying to roll around in bath time may be right around the corner!
