Dogs & Hardwood Floors

Dogs and hardwood floors may not always be an ideal option. In fact, some dogs may hesitate to walk on hardwood floors because their paw pads have less traction. Many people believe hardwood floors are the best for dogs because they are easy to clean and do not collect the amount of dander that carpet does. However, we must look at the big picture. Below is some information on why your four-legged friend could be struggling with walking on hardwood floors and some things you can do about it.

If a dog has slipped on hardwood floors in the past, it may be hesitant to walk on them in the future. Unfortunately, dogs can pull muscles or tear ligaments if they slip on hardwood floors. Furthermore, if the dog is older, it can lead to permanent issues such as hip problems, arthritis, and concerns with joints. Please realize that this can also happen on laminate flooring, tiles, and polished cement. The good news is that there are ways that you can prevent your dog from slipping on your hardwood floor. For example, you may be able to sand and refinish the flooring. The aluminum oxide will also protect your floors and is considered non-slip.

Dust and debris on hardwood flooring can also cause a floor to become slippery. We recommend you sweep and mop your floors frequently, especially in high-traffic areas. You may need to clean your floors daily, depending on how dirty they get. Consider a robotic vacuum to do the work for you!

You can also consider placing area rugs or carpet runners around the house on smooth surfaces. This will prevent your dog from slipping all over the place when they walk. Ensure that you purchase an anti-slip rug pad to place under the rug, making it more secure.

Making your pup feel happy and comfortable should be your main priority. Invest the time into making your hardwood floors dog-proof so that your four-legged friend can walk comfortably. As always, patience and consistency go a long way!
