Dogs & Fireworks
Summertime can be exciting for us humans. Not only do we get to enjoy the warm weather, but we get to experience an entire season full of holidays, celebrations, and festivals. Most of these events end with loud bangs and booms. That is right…. we are talking about fireworks! These may be a sight to see for us, but some dogs are terrified of them! Just think, an instinct for dogs is to be afraid of loud noises. It is a survival instinct for them. The worst part about it is that sometimes these loud noises come out of nowhere, leaving everyone in a panic!
Here are a few tips that we have put together to help you be better prepared for any frantic situation which may arise!
- Make other plans for your pup. If you know that there is a possibility of fireworks at any certain event, consider dropping your dog off at a dog sitter’s house, or with family or a friend. You can even hire a sitter to come stay with your dog for a few hours!
- Positive reassurance works wonders. Do not, under any circumstance act like fireworks are a stressful situation. If your dog sees that you are stressed, they will always define fireworks as a stressful situation. Speak to your dog in a calm soothing voice and get through the experience together!
- Close the blinds! Although you cannot cover up the loud booms, you can eliminate the visual. Close your curtains, blinds, windows, etc. to ensure that your dog cannot see the bright lights of the fireworks.
- Anxiety relief. Talk to your Veterinarian or trainer about options on how to manage your dog’s anxiety during fireworks. There are several options which include: Thundershirts, supplements, and medication.
- Food and water! Be sure to feed your dog and promote proper hydration before fireworks. Extra anxiety will cause your dog to avoid food and drink. It is best to ensure that their nutrition and hydration are on point beforehand.
- Entertainment is key. Perhaps it is time to get a new, interesting and excited toy for your four-legged friend! Try as snack too. If they are busy with something they love, you will have much better results!
- Be patient! It is impossible to lead your dog in the right direction overnight. Be patient with them. When applying the tips above, you will surely find some success!
Also know that not all dogs are afraid of fireworks. If you have a dog that goes along their merry way during a fireworks show, consider yourself a lucky pet parent!
