Dogs and Possums: What to Do if Your Dog Comes in Contact with a Possum

Dogs are naturally curious creatures and encounters with wildlife,
such as possums, are not uncommon. Possums are generally
non-aggressive and more likely to play dead when threatened, but their
presence can still be a cause for concern for pet owners. If your dog
comes into contact with a possum, it’s essential to stay calm and
assess the situation carefully.

First, ensure your dog is safe and not injured. Possums can carry
parasites like fleas, ticks, and mites, which can transfer to your
dog. Check your dog for any bites or scratches, and if you find any,
clean the wounds thoroughly with an antiseptic. It’s advisable to
visit your veterinarian to rule out any risk of infection or disease.

Next, consider the health of the possum. If it appears injured or
unresponsive, contact local wildlife rescue services. Do not attempt
to handle the possum yourself, as it could bite or scratch if it feels
threatened. Ensure your dog is up-to-date with vaccinations,
particularly for diseases like rabies, even though possums are rarely
rabies carriers.

Prevent future encounters by securing your yard and keeping your dog
on a leash during walks in areas where wildlife is common. Training
your dog to respond to commands like “leave it” can also help in
