Protecting Dogs from Coyotes
A coyote may appear to be a dog from a distance, but as you get closer to the proximity of the animal, you discover that it is not a dog! One would think coyotes are only roaming wildlife reserves, farms, and forests; however, that is not always the case. Coyotes have been spotted in urban areas as well! - Always leash your dog. Some dogs may enjoy walking without a leash, but this can create a huge risk if encountering a coyote. If your dog is off-leash, they become an easier target for a coyote attack.
- Avoid feeding the coyotes. Coyotes are trying to survive just like any other animal. Do not establish your property as a food source because the coyote(s) will return, creating more risks.
- Stay calm. We understand this is easier said than done! If you encounter a coyote with your dog, do not run. Running will inspire the coyote to chase you. Move away from the coyote while keeping an eye out for their location.
- Pick up dog waste. Coyotes have a keen sense of smell. The scent of your dog’s waste can attract them, so ensure you clean up your yard regularly.
- Build a fence. Coyotes can climb, but if you can build a tall fence, it will protect your four-legged friend while they are enjoying the outdoors.
