DIY Doggie First Aid Kit

DIY Doggie First Aid Kit

A first aid kit is important not only in the event of a natural disaster, but any time you are away from the control of your home, vehicle or immediate help.  With this being said, it is a good idea to have a first aid kit handy for those unexpected accidents with your four-legged friends.  We recommend that you store the first aid kit in a durable, waterproof container that can travel with you.  There are so many items which can be represented in a Doggie First Aid Kit.  We have compiled a list to help get you started!

-Manual. Having a detailed guide to common and uncommon ailments in the palm of your hand will help keep you calm and allow you to find the best solution.

-Emergency contact information.  Have your veterinarian’s number handy as well as directions to the clinic.

-Tick remover tool. Beware of Lyme disease!  As soon as you remove a tick, the better.

-Gauze.  This can be used to cover a cut and help it stop bleeding.

-Muzzle. Dogs can resort to pure animal instincts when they are scared or hurt.  This may lead to biting.

-Non-stick bandages or wraps.  Cover the wound to prevent infection.

-Disinfectant.  Wound disinfectant wipes using non-sting ingredients like betadine are suggested.

-Wound spray. Pack a wound spray to topically clean and heal.

-Pain relief. Ask your vet for the best pain medication for your dog.

-Cold and heat packs. Cool down skin after a burn or keep your dog warm if they are hypothermic.

-Saline solution. Use it to clean wounds, eyes or ears.

-Nail clipper or nail file.  This helps with cut or broken nails.

Be sure to check the kit every few months and keep an eye on any medication expiration dates and replace them as needed.
