Cross Country Trips with Dogs

Cross Country Trips with Dogs

Do you love to travel across the United States but hate leaving your four-legged friend behind? You are not alone! A little planning will go a long way to ensure that you have a memorable trip with your adventurous dog. We will speak about some of the most common ways to travel cross country with your dog throughout this article.

Car – This is generally the best way to travel with pets as it puts them under the least amount of stress. One of the best things you can do before your long drive is to take short drives around the neighborhood in the days leading up to your trip. We recommend that your dog travels in a car kennel. This will prevent distractions and keep you and your dog safe. Be sure to stop every few hours for potty and walk breaks.

Airplane – Most major airlines allow pets to travel in either the cabin or cargo hold. Smaller dogs and most cats can travel in the cabin if they are in a carrier approved by the airline. Larger pets going by cargo must also be in an airline-approved crate or kennel.

Bus – For the most part, only service animals are allowed on board. If your pet is a service animal, traveling by bus is an excellent solution if you do not want to fly or drive.

Rideshare – Pets are transported at the discretion of the driver. If you reserve rideshare, you should be transparent with the driver in letting them know that you have a pet. You should also bring a travel carrier and blanket as a gesture of respect.

As you can see, there are many ways to travel with your pet. You do not always need to leave them behind when you go on adventures. You may discover that they are the best travel companion you could ever ask for!
