Coconut Oil is Great for Dogs!

Coconut oil is a healthy fat which contains 80 to 90% saturated fat.  Do not assume the worst!  Coconut oil is made up of fatty acids, the primary of which is lauric acid, which can be very beneficial. It also contains MCTs (Medium Chain Triglycerides), which are believed to be healthy as well. You may be wondering where coconut oil comes from.  It comes from either the fresh coconut “meat” or dried coconut called copra.  Please continue reading this article as we will break down the many benefits of coconut oil for your pup.

  • Antifungal Properties – A study by the National Institute of Health (NIH) determined that coconut oil can fight against fungal infections.
  • Antibacterial – Coconut oil can be effective against various strains of bacteria.
  • Flea & Tick Remedy – Coconut oil shampoo can be used to eliminate fleas and ticks.  Bonus: It is also effective against lice and mites.  Talk about a win-win!
  • Minor Wound Care – It can make a wound heal a lot faster as it promotes tissue repair.

Coconut oil can be given orally, about 1 tablespoon per 30 pounds a day.  We recommend that you speak with your veterinarian before doing anything, as excessive amounts of coconut oil can lead to an upset stomach.  You may also apply it topically to a wound.  Start with a small amount on the affected area and wipe off any excess oil.
