Candle Safety 

There is a lot to consider when burning candles around your dogs.  It isn’t just about keeping burning candles out of reach, but also what they are made of.  We all know that dogs can get curious.  Why wouldn’t they want to explore a candle?  In this article we will speak about the overall safety of candles.

You should never leave burning candles unattended.  This is a common rule, regardless of if you have animals or not.  They present the obvious fire hazard around dogs, especially those who love to jump on furniture.  You need to place candles in a location where you can keep an eye on them, and out of reach of animals.  Do not place them on low tables or windowsills.  One tip that we can offer is to place the candle in a bowl of water.  Ensure that the bowl is wide enough to accommodate the full length of the candle, plus the flame.  This will help obviate danger if the candle is knocked over.

When a candle is burning, it draws on the wax and wick to stay alight.  Depending on the type of candle that you are burning, it emits toxins into the home environment, which can be bad for your pets.  Keep in mind that animals are more sensitive to these poisons, mainly because of their size.  You can protect your dogs by avoiding the following candle ingredients:

• Paraffin
• Lead
• Benzene
• Acrolein
• Toluene
• Artificial colors and scents
