Chocolate is Bad for your Dog. Fact or Fiction

Chocolate is Bad for your Dog. Fact or Fiction?

Are you thinking about feeding your dog some chocolate?  Please think again.  It can truly be toxic and dangerous to your dog.  Although the risk level depends on the size of your dog and the amount of chocolate in which they digest.  Of course, larger dogs may be able to handle a small amount of chocolate, whereas the same amount could cause major issues to a smaller dog.

The golden question: Why is it harmful to dogs?  Chocolate comes from the cacao tree which includes substances such as caffeine, plus many other chemicals.  Doses of this can lead to diarrhea and vomiting in dogs.  That’s not it though.  Larger portions of chocolate may cause seizures or even muscle tremors.  Imagine if your dog drank a pot of coffee!  Scary, right?

According to research, several dogs are hospitalized overnight due to chocolate consumption around confection-centered holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Easter and Christmas.  It may be a good idea to hide those sweet treats from your four-legged friend!
