Can All Dogs Swim

Can All Dogs Swim?

A lot of people believe that all dogs can naturally swim. However, this is not always the case.  Most dogs will attempt a doggy paddle if they find themselves in water, but not all dogs are good swimmers and can stay afloat.

Dogs usually fall into one of three categories:

  1. Dogs who absolutely love the water.  Most of the time, these dogs will have thick, waterproof coats, and webbed feet.  An example of this type of dog would be a Labrador Retriever.
  2. Dogs who are reluctant to swim but can be taught.
  3. Dogs who have trouble staying afloat for physiological reasons, such as those with breathing issues or those who have shorter legs.

If your dog can swim and they truly want to, do not hesitate to get into the water with them!  We recommend that you start our slow and in shallow water. The good news is that you can incorporate a lifejacket, specifically designed for your dog.  Always keep in mind that your dog may be nervous to partake in this activity.   Do your best to keep it fun.  Do not get discouraged if your dog does not enjoy the water; it’s not for everyone!
