Spring Health Concerns for Dogs

Spring Health Concerns for Dogs

Spring is finally here, and we are excited to enjoy it with our four-legged friends! It may be a beautiful season and all, but it comes with some concerns. To enjoy the nice weather that Spring has to offer, we need to keep our dogs safe. Let’s take a deep look into some things that we need to keep an eye on.

Allergies – Did you know that dogs can suffer from seasonal allergies as much as humans do? Spring time can cause even more allergy symptoms in our pets. Common allergens for dogs include certain flowers or plants, dust, and mold. The bad thing is that allergy symptoms may appear in the form of itching, coughing, sneezing, or an extra oily coat.

Toxic Plants – It is important to know that not all plants are animal friendly. In fact, if your dog ingests just a small number of common plants, they can experience major health issues. Some dangerous plants to look out for include day lily, crocus, bittersweet, tiger lily, and tulips. There are many more as well. Please do your research!

Fertilizers and Pesticides – Do you have a garden? If so, you may need to add fertilizer or pesticides to your gardening routine. These can contain toxic chemicals which may negatively impact your four-legged friend. The good news is that there are pet-friendly products out there that are not toxic to dogs.

Spring is an enjoyable season full of beauty. However, you can see that it poses some risks to our pups. This is a great opportunity to remind ourselves of how we can help to keep our dogs safe from common springtime hazards. Do not hesitate to contact your veterinarian if your dog needs medical attention. Always remember that prevention is the best medicine!
