Easter Egg Hunts for Dogs
As we know, 2022 is flying by and Easter is right around the corner! One of the most popular traditions during the holiday is to have an Easter egg hunt. Setting up a dog-friendly egg hunt is a great way to test your dog’s sense of smell and scent game skills. The good news is that egg hunts can be assembled in your own yard, or even in the house! We wanted to share some tips with you on how to successfully have a doggy Easter egg hunt.
Assemble – You will need to find your participants for the egg hunt! You may be wondering what type of egg to use. Plastic eggs are an ideal option but may pose a few risks. Be sure to choose eggs large enough to ensure that your dog cannot swallow them whole.
Treats – Your dog relies on their amazing scent capabilities to find rewards. Therefore, you should choose treats that have a strong smell. As you progress through the hunt, praise your dog for finding the eggs.
Watch and Manage – If you are doing your own egg hunt at home, then a leash is optional. However, for a publicly organized dog egg hunt, participants should be leashed. This will help prevent unwanted interactions with other dogs. Plus, having a leash on your dog will help guide your dog toward hard-to-find eggs or treats!
Avoid Candy – Be sure that you are not mixing children’s treats with dog treats. For example, chocolate may be used for a child’s egg hunt, but it is very toxic to our four-legged friends.
Now that you have a better understanding of how to host your own dog egg hunt, we hope that you start to plan soon! As you can see, it can be a great bonding activity for you and your dog. The treats are just an added bonus.
