Spotlight Breed: Basenji
Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week. This is where we feature one of the most interesting dog breeds around the globe. Today we are excited to spotlight the Basenji breed. This is a very interesting breed with many characteristics to note. Out of Africa, the Basenji breed was originally found in the Congo. They would use both scent and sight to hunt and control village rodent populations. Today, they make great, loving, furry family members!
If we had to choose three words to describe this breed, we would choose clever, endearing, and loving. The Basenji makes a wonderful companion for the person or family who can stay a step ahead of them. The good thing about this breed is that they are very adaptable. They can live in small living spaces and are good for novice owners. They are also very independent and can tolerate being alone at times.
The overall friendliness of the Basenji breed is 5-stars. They are very affectionate with their family and love to be around their “pack”. They are also great around children, other dogs, and even strangers! One of the best traits about this breed is that they are extremely easy to breed. They do not have the potential to shed a lot or drool. They are easy to groom which will save a lot of money in the long run!
Training may be a challenge with the Basenji breed. They are super intelligent dogs, but they often possess a “what’s in it for me” attitude. In this case, you will need to be extra patient with them and include games and rewards which will make training worthwhile. Be on the lookout! Their prey-drive is an extreme high so if they see something that they want, you better believe that they will go after it!
