Working From Home with Dogs: Tips
Perhaps you’ve been working from home your entire career, or you started working from home during the midst of the pandemic. Either way, there are some tips that you can take into consideration to ensure that you are productive, even when you have a four-legged friend around the house during work hours. The most important thing is that you will need to establish a routine that suits both your job responsibilities and your pet ownership responsibilities. A proactive approach will yield success. Please see our tips below!
- Take care of your dog before logging into work. It is important to tend to your dog’s needs first because you start the workday at home. Be sure to walk them, feed them, and play with them. Don’t be tempted to start the workday and then feed your dog and/or play with them. This is a huge distraction which will take you away from your job.
- A dedicated space for your pup will work wonders. Depending on how much room you have in your home, we recommend that you set up a separate work area for yourself that is off limits to your dog. On the other hand, if you are okay with your dog being in the same room as you AND you are still productive, then allow them to do so. Chances are, they will be taking a nap and enjoying your presence.
- Regular dog breaks are a plus. Working from home successfully requires a schedule and good time management to maintain productivity. The good thing about working from home is that your work breaks can include spending quality time with your dog. Schedule designated dog breaks in advance. Go for a walk, play a game, or have a short cuddle session to help reduce stress.
- Keep your dog occupied. Although it would be cute at times, it is never a good idea for your dog to participate on a work conference call or virtual meeting. Therefore, it is important to ensure that your dog is always occupied. Give them a chew toy, treat, or mental stimulation puzzle to keep them busy while you are on that important work call!
Don’t forget to enjoy all the benefits of working remote with a dog. Working at home can be not only productive, but a real treat for you and your dog. It may strengthen the bond that you have with your four-legged friend. Be sure to take the time to find the best strategies to ensure a happy balance between your work and your pet.
