Why Do Some Dogs Dislike Rain? 

Have you ever noticed your dog shying away from rain when other dogs love it? Some dogs refuse to go outside if it is raining! According to research, not only does rain make dogs feel uncomfortable, but it may also make them scared to get in trouble with you. There may have been a time when you got upset about your dog tracking in mud or rain in the house. Remembering the aggravation it caused gave your dog a good reason not to like the rain!

Some dogs may not like the sound of rain. In addition, when it rains, sometimes there is thunder and lightning, which can be very scary for your dog. Barometric pressure is another cause for your dog to dislike the rainy season. Dogs are more sensitive to barometric pressure changes, which may be an issue for your dog.

You should never encourage your dog to fear the rain. We encourage you to introduce your dog to water slowly. Most dogs do not like getting baths, so getting them used to water may be difficult! Start taking your dog outside to potty while it is raining. You may use an umbrella first. Allow your dog to get used to the sound of rain and the feel of the wet grass on its feet. Let them smell everything while you are with them, so they are less fearful.

If you have tried a variety of things and your dog is still not happy about going outside in the rain, you can invest in a large umbrella placed in the yard where they can go potty. You can continue carrying your umbrella while walking if you do not have a yard. Pay attention to how your dog is behaving. Your dog will have to get used to rain eventually. There is no escaping rain, unless you want to move somewhere it never rains, like the desert! As always, patience and consistency go a long way. Allow your dog to experience rain as if it isn’t bad.
