Tips for Dog Separation Anxiety

Tips for Dog Separation Anxiety

The pandemic spoiled our dogs because we were around them more than usual. As the world shifts back into a “normal” state, pets may experience separation anxiety. We want to share some tips to help you transition your dog to an independent mindset.

  1. You must stay strong. Your dog may cry or whine if they are experiencing separation anxiety. Please do not give in! Please do your best to wait until they calm down and praise them.

  1. You must take it slow. The best thing you can do to relieve separation anxiety is to ease in by introducing alone time in short periods.

  1. You must not make a big deal about your departure or arrival. Are you leaving home or coming home? Do not make a big deal about it. With time, your dog will become more confident that you will return home.

  1. You must keep your pet active. If you plan to be gone longer, it is best to exercise with your pet. Take a long walk or visit the dog park so your four-legged friend can burn off excess energy.

We hope that you have a better understanding of some things you can do to help prevent separation anxiety. Distractions are another great tool. Give your dog their favorite long-lasting chew toy (ensure they will not choke on it) or a dog food puzzle before you go. Mental stimulation is crucial to dogs and will help lessen anxiety. We recommend that you consult your veterinarian for further advice if all else fails.
