Tips for Boarding Your Dog
Boarding facilities provide owners with a place for their pets to stay when they can’t travel with them. It is best to be prepared if you plan on boarding your dog. Please consider the following tips to get ready for boarding while you’re also preparing for your trip!
- Vaccinations are important! Kennels should require dogs to be up to date on their vaccinations. You will need to consider vaccines such as rabies, distemper, and Bordetella. Ask your veterinarian if your dog is current on their shots. Always provide the boarding facility with current vaccination records.
- Fill out all forms. The boarding facility will have you fill out forms. Make sure that you include contact information so that the facility can reach out in the event of an emergency. The best thing to do is call ahead of time and get the paperwork in advance. That way you can take time to fill it out and ensure that you do not miss anything.
- Bring familiar items! Your dog will feel more comfortable and at ease with familiar items around. Be sure to pack a blanket, some of their favorite toys, and a few treats too. You can also pack one of your old shirts or a pillow so that they are comforted by your smell.
- Keep a consistent diet. Now is not the time to switch up your dog’s diet. If you do, they may end up with digestive issues. Pack your dog’s regular food for boarding.
- Stay calm! When it comes time to drop your dog off, don’t make a big deal of it. This can make your dog more upset when you leave. Try to stay calm and happy when dropping your dog off. It will help them stay more relaxed in the new surroundings.
Boarding should be a good experience for you and your dog. If you follow our recommendations, you will be well prepared to board your dog. This will help put you at ease and allow you to enjoy your trip without the added stress!
