Tip to a Healthy Dog Coat

Did you know that a dog’s coat can changed depending on lifestyle and diet?  As dog owners, we want our four-legged friends to have silky smooth fur, but often there is a disconnect.  This article will cover some simple tips to a healthy dog coat that are super easy to add into any daily routine.

What your dog consumes is a huge factor in determining how healthy their coat is.  If they are getting everything that they need each day, they will more than likely have a beautiful, healthy-looking coat.  However, if they lack certain vitamins or proteins, it will show in their fur.  This is in your control.  Speak with your veterinarian to verify that your dog is receiving the right amount of nutrients and adjust if necessary.

On the other hand, a dog may have a great diet, but their body fails to produce a certain vitamin or element that is required for a healthy dog coat.  This is where supplements come into play to increase the quality of their coat.  Coconut oil has an amazing list of beneficial properties including improving digestion, skin and coat, and weight loss.  Salmon oil may be another option as it is filled with Omega-3 Fatty Acids which will help produce a healthy coat.

Grooming your dog is another piece of the puzzle.  Schedule a haircut if needed to get rid of the top layer down to the soft newer fur.  This will help get rid of the “dead” hair which makes the coat look unhealthy.  Give your dog a bath.  Be sure to use a special shampoo that is approved specifically for dogs.

As you can see, it is your responsibility to ensure that your dog has a beautiful and healthy coat.  There are other ways as well and your veterinarian will definitely be able to assist.  You may need to make a few changes to routine, but it will yield excellent results along the way!
