Spotlight Breed Redbone Coonhound

Spotlight Breed: Redbone Coonhound

Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week.  This is where we feature one of the most interesting dog breeds from around the globe.  Today we are excited to spotlight the Redbone Coonhound!  This is a medium-sized hound who has a gorgeous red coat.  They are intelligent, sensitive, and affectionate, but there are so many more features to note about the breed.  Please continue reading on to learn more about the Redbone Coonhound!

Even though the breed is medium-sized and packed with energy and adventure, they are still able to adapt well to apartment and small home living.  Given the fact that the Redbone Coonhound is highly sensitive, independent thinking, and assertive, we do not recommend this breed to the novice owner as they may find these traits difficult to manage.

The breed is very sensitive as they take a lot of things to heart.  The good thing about this is that they love forming a close bond with them “pack” and they love to love and give affection. The Redbone Coonhound has an all-around friendliness that is out of this world!  Not only are they affectionate with their family, but they enjoy being around children, other dogs, and even strangers!  If you have a Redbone Coonhound that is anxious or nervous around others, a little socialization will do the trick.

The breed is very intelligent and easy to train.  They are more adept at forming an association between a prompt, an action, and a consequence very quickly.  Just keep in mind that they may have a “what’s in it for me?” attitude which will require some sort of positive reinforcement during your training lessons.  Keep an eye out for the wanderlust potential of the Redbone Coonhound.  These dogs were bred to range long distances, and given the chance, they will take off after anything that catches their eye!

The Redbone Coonhound may be a perfect fit if you are looking for a fun-loving, intelligent, and adventurous breed!  We will leave you with our favorite quote about the breed: “I’m not gonna give up, shut up, or let up, til I’m taken up…as a matter of fact, I’m just getting warmed up!”
