Spotlight Breed Pointer

Spotlight Breed: Pointer

Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week.  This is where we will help you learn about one of the most interesting dog breeds around the globe.  We are excited to spotlight the Pointer dog breed this week!  You are probably wondering how this breed got the name “Pointer”.  It is because they were bred to “point” birds and small game such as rabbits.  If we had to choose three words to describe this breed, we would have to go with energetic, fun-loving, and loyal.  However, there are so many more characteristics to note!

We mentioned that the Pointer is very active.  With this being said, we do not recommend them to live in a small apartment or home.  They are constantly needing physical and mental stimulation and smaller spaces do not normally provide such.  The Pointer can also be very sensitive.  They are known to wear heavy hearts, but this just means that they can form a very close bond with their pack.

The Pointer breed is extremely easy to train.  They are very good at forming an association between a prompt, an action, and a consequence.   However, given their high amount of intelligence, they may possess a “what’s in it for me” attitude.  This is where you will have to incorporate positive reinforcement into your training methods!  The breed also has a high potential for mouthiness – get ready to hear all the barks and howls.

If you are looking for a dog that has high energy and intensity and their exercise needs are through the roof, then the Pointer breed is for you!  Their high potential for playfulness will always keep you on your toes and you will never be bored.  We will leave you with our favorite quote about the Pointer: “Don’t walk behind me, I may not lead.  Don’t walk in front of me, I may not follow.  Just walk beside me and by my friend.”
