Spotlight Breed: Plott

Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week. We are excited to teach you about a fun and unique breed from around the world! Our spotlight breed of the week is the Plott. This pack-hunting Plott dog breed was developed in North Carolina more than 200 years ago to hunt bears and wild boars. The Plott breed is still used as a hunting dog today, and they also enjoy dog sports and other forms of tracking. Please continue reading to learn more about this amazing dog breed!

Let’s start by talking about the adaptability level of the Plott breed. We do not recommend this breed to a novice dog owner! We mentioned earlier that the breed is a working breed. Therefore, they thrive on mental and physical stimulation. They do not adapt well to small homes or apartment living because these spaces do not provide adequate space for stimulation. This highly sensitive breed requires additional patience that new dog owners may not possess.

The Plott is a very friendly dog. They are affectionate with family and love to form close bonds with the people that they are around the most. They absolutely love to be around other dogs and will do about anything to be the star of the show! You may encounter difficulties when a Plott is around children or strangers. Therefore, we recommend basic obedience and socialization training to strengthen their skills and make them more comfortable.

Given the high intelligence level of the breed, the Plott is relatively easy to train. They can quickly form an association between a prompt, an action, and a consequence. Positive reinforcement is encouraged during training sessions because the breed often has a “what’s in it for me?” attitude. They love being rewarded for their hard work!

High-energy dogs like the Plott are always ready and waiting for action! They were born to perform a job, so they have the stamina to last a long time. The Plott needs daily, vigorous exercise; if they do not get it, they may become destructive. We recommend you devise creative ways to keep the Plott busy and entertained!

Are you looking for a high-energy, intelligent, and loveable dog? If so, the Plott may be for you! We will leave you with a fun fact about the breed. The Plott has become more than just a hunter and state symbol in modern times. They are also used in police departments as service dogs!
