This is one of the oldest dog breeds ever. The Keeshond breed traveled the canals and rivers of Holland in the 17th and 18th centuries. The adaptability of the Keeshond is very good. They can adapt to any sized living space, and they are good for novice dog owners. However, there is one important factor that you need to keep in mind – the breed is extremely sensitive. This means that they take a lot of things to heart and do not tolerate being alone for long periods of time. The good thing is that they love to form close bonds with their “pack” which makes them extremely loveable.
The Keeshond is a very friendly dog breed. They are affectionate with family and children. With the proper socialization training, they do exceptionally well around other dogs and strangers! It is important to pay close attention to the health and grooming needs of this breed. The Keeshond tends to shed a lot so you will need to be prepared for the level of dog hair that you see in the house. We recommend a good vacuum and a de-shedding tool as they will be your best friends!
It may take some time and patience when training the Keeshond. They can form an association between a prompt, an action, and a consequence. However, they may possess a “what’s in it for me?” attitude. With this said, you will need to incorporate treats and rewards into your training sessions. The Keeshond also has the tendency to bark or howl. Do not be alarmed as this is their nature. However, there are many training opportunities to address excessive barking habits.
