Keeping Carpets Clean with Pets

Pets and carpet – do they go hand in hand?  Is it too much work to maintain a clean carpet while taking the best care of your dogs?  From pet stains (yes, there will be tons of accidents!) to chewing, there are various things that can happen to a carpet in a pet-friendly home.  However, there is good news!  There are several things that you can do to maintain the freshest look in your house.  We are here to help!

Carpets can get dirty even if pets are not present.  You are amazed at the amount of dirt, dust and debris that your vacuum picks up after a nice stroll around the house.  Keep in mind that a lot of this dirt is tracked in from outside.  You can keep a towel near the door and gently wipe your pet’s paws each time they enter the house from outside.  You may also consider a mat which will help grab some of the dirt.  By placing area rugs, mats, or runners in high traffic areas will limit the damage to the actual carpet as well.

Keep your pet clean!  The cleaner the dog, the cleaner the carpet.  Keep your dog groomed and tidy and you will find that there is less mess that transfers to the carpet.  Your vacuum will be your best friend!  Run the vacuum regularly to avoid hair and dirt buildup.  This will prevent all of the debris from sinking lower into the carpet which will preserve the overall presence.

Always keep in mind that accidents happen!  Be prepared because even the most well-trained pet may have an accident from time to time.  Be sure that you have a pet stain remover and a handheld steam cleaner on hand.  Utilize baking soda to eliminate strong pet odors.  It may be best to keep your four-legged friends in a confined area.  Perhaps there are certain rooms in your house that have wood or tile floors.  It may not be a bad idea to make those areas your puppy haven!

All in all, staying on top of carpet cleaning is your best bet.  Attack messes when you first see them and stay current on your floor cleaning schedule.  You may also consider renting a professional rug cleaner a few times a year to do a “deep” clean.
