Endangered Dog Breeds

Endangered Dog Breeds

We love popular dog breeds like golden retrievers, bulldogs, and chihuahuas. However, we seem to forget about the dogs that fall to the wayside. You may be wondering why this happens in the first place. Breeds tend to disappear due to the illegalization of hunting deer and foxes. Then some dogs don’t make the “popularity” cut.  Below is a list of some of the most endangered dog breeds in the world.

  1. Scottish Deerhound – This breed became extinct due to exclusive ownership in Scotland. As a strong part of Scotland’s history, many people attempt to keep the Scottish Deerhounds alive.
  2. Skye Terrier – This dog breed is also from Scotland. Farmers used Skye Terriers to chase off otters, foxes, and other pests. The breed is a true “working” breed!
  3. Bloodhound – The Bloodhound is known for its terrific sense of smell. One of the most interesting facts about the Bloodhound is that they are stubborn and difficult to train. However, they are intelligent!
  4. Smooth Collie – This dog breed is known for its intelligence, agility, and ease of training. The Kennel Club registered 78 Smooth Collies in 2015.
  5. Chinook – This breed was initially bred as a sled dog in New Hampshire. Chinooks remain one of the scarcest dog breeds in the world.
  6. German Pinscher – This dog breed looks the part of a vicious guard dog. One of Germany’s oldest breeds, the German Pinscher, was named Endangered Dog of the Year by National Purebred Dog Day organizers.

You can play a role in the preservation of each of the dog breeds that we mentioned. How can you make an impact? Spread the word about how and why these certain breeds are going away. Maybe you can even do your part and bring them back by adopting one yourself!
