Dogs & Air Pollution – The Hard Truth

When we hear “air pollution,” we cannot think of anything good to associate it with. Air pollution causes adverse health effects such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

Unfortunately, the same applies to our four-legged friends. Many pet owners are concerned about the effects of air pollution on animals.

Therefore, scientists are beginning to study the potential risks when pets become exposed. Let’s take a deeper dive into this issue.

First, it is good to know that air pollution evolves from several sources. Many would assume that air pollution only comes from vehicles. Still, they must realize it comes from construction and gasoline burning in ovens, fireplaces, power plants, and tobacco plants. Are your wheels turning yet? It doesn’t matter if you live in an urban or a rural area. You will always be exposed to chemicals such as fungicides and herbicides regardless of where you live.

Many studies have concluded that pets living in homes with cigarette smokers have increased health risks. Pets spend much time on the floor where the smoke concentrations are higher. As stated above, pets are at risk from outdoor air pollution. Scientists have examined the brains of local dogs to dogs in cities with less pollution. It was discovered that the brains of dogs living in certain areas showed signs of inflammation and things associated with Alzheimer’s disease in humans.

What are some ways that you can reduce you and your dog’s exposure to air pollution? There is no escaping the fact that dogs spend most of their time indoors or in the yard. As an owner, you should minimize exposure to air pollution inside and outside the house. Change your air filters often, vacuum and frequently sweep to remove hair and pollutants, and choose pet-friendly cleaning products free of chemicals. It may be easier said than done, but you can also choose outdoor exercise where the air is much cleaner, typically away from major roads.
