City Living with A Dog

City Living with A Dog

To no surprise, raising a dog in a city is a lot different compared to raising a dog in the suburbs or a rural area. Think about it. A dog living in the city will need to get used to different sights and sounds. For example, you will experience noisy traffic, crowded sidewalks, sirens, and other things. The good news is that it is possible for a dog to live in a big city. We wanted to share some tips on how you can make this a success. Please see below.

The Breed is Important! You must choose a breed that is well suited for apartment living. Do not choose a breed that barks all day or needs tons of exercise. This wouldn’t be the best match.

Sights, Sounds, and Smells – oh my! This big city can be intimidating to you and your dog. Therefore, it is important to help your dog grow accustomed to all the unique aspects of a big city. Introduce them to things like walking on crowded sidewalks, experiencing the sound of rush hour traffic, and taking some rides in an elevator.

Potty Issues – Potty training is especially important when your dog lives in a big city. House training pads will work wonders. Otherwise, you will need to establish a consistent schedule for walking and potty breaks.

Be a Good Neighbor! You must be a responsible pet parent. Consider things like training your dog not to bark, focus on separation anxiety, keep your fur babies on a leash, and clean up after them.

Dog Parks are a Plus! Walking your dog is a great way to provide essential exercise and mental stimulation. However, dog parks are even better. The good thing is that there are normally tons of dog parks in larger cities. They are a way to get your four-legged friend outside to enjoy the fresh air and meet some new friends!

As you can see, there are many ways you can live with your dog in a big city. With a little bit of planning and commitment, you’ll be able to enjoy this lifestyle with your four-legged friend!
