Bad Dog Breath – What You Can Do to Help!

Bad dog breath can often smell worse than a lot of other bad smells!  Unfortunately, this is a common problem and there may be a lot of reasons behind it.  In this article, we will cover some of the reasons why some dogs have bad breath and how you can help.

Some common signs of bad breath in dogs include the following:

  • Change in chewing behavior
  • Excessive licking
  • Inflamed bleeding gums
  • Scratching at nose and mouth

These all may be indicators that your dog is having oral problems.  The best thing that you can do in this case is to schedule a vet appointment.  Your vet will check up on things such as cavities, gum disease, plague, and tartar buildup.  These are all problems which are linked to poor dental hygiene.  Other cases that can cause bad breath can be diabetes, liver disease, gastro-intestinal issues, and kidney disease.

There are several ways that you can help a dog who had bad breath.  A lot of people do not realize, but you can give your dog a few drops of lemon, coconut oil, or yogurt.  This will help clean their mouths and attack the bacteria which causes the bad breath.  However, the best option is teeth brushing.  This may not be as simple as it sounds, but it will help keep the dog’s teeth and mouth healthy.  Keep in mind that you will need to look for a tooth paste that is dog friendly.  Dental chews may be another good option to help with bad breath.  The good thing about dental hygiene chews is that they lessen the amount of plaque and freshen breath along the way.

If you follow our recommendations, you should see an improvement in your dog’s dental hygiene and breath.  Also, if you feel that there is an underlying issue causing the bad breath, please visit your veterinarian immediately.  It is best to catch things early before it’s too late!
