Frequently Banned Dog Breeds
Unfortunately, some states have passed laws to prevent the adoption of specific dog breeds. Often, these laws can be complicated and vary by city or county. Keep in mind that if a state doesn’t ban a breed, it can still be prohibited by home insurance companies, landlords, and homeowners associations. We are sharing our list of the most frequently banned dog breeds around the United States below.
German Shepherd – This is a wonderful and intelligent dog breed used as police, guide, and farmhand dogs. However, due to their high aggression statistics, some places have banned the adoption of this breed.
Chow Chow – This strong-willed and independent dog breed is known to show aggression and doesn’t always get along well with people and other animals.
Doberman Pinscher – This is an affectionate breed that loves to be energetic and playful. The breed may be banned due to being aggressive. However, training and socialization will help them be friendly like other dogs.
Cane Corso – This dog doesn’t usually like other dogs or cats. Although quiet and calm, the Cane Corso is a frequently banned breed.
Rottweiler – Dogs in this breed are not hyper and needy. Rottweilers are recommended for experienced owners because of their size. Training must start as soon as possible while they are still small enough to be easily handled.
Akita Inu – This breed tends to be very aggressive around their food bowl, making them one of the most commonly banned dog breeds in the United States.
These are just a handful of some of the most banned dog breeds. We want you to remember that if the dog breed is on the list, it doesn’t mean it is horrible or hard to take care of. All of the dogs that we mentioned above can be super sweet too. Unfortunately, bans on dog breeds give them a bad reputation. Any dog can be aggressive, depending on the situation. Therefore, proper obedience and socialization training is a must!
