Signs That Your Rescue Dog Has Been Abused
It is estimated that over 3.1 million dogs enter animal shelters across the country every year. Unfortunately, many of these dogs come from an abusive households. You may adopt a rescue dog and notice signs that they have been abused in their previous life. Below are some of the most common red flags to look for.
Issues with Food – No matter the age, breed, or gender, most dogs love food! You may notice that your dog has a strange attitude towards food. For example, your dog may eat their food too quickly or show signs of aggression if you come close to its bowl while eating. These are signs are food aggression.
Physical Scars – Physical scars tell a lot when it comes to determining if your rescue dog comes from an abusive home. If your dog had healing wounds or was too skinny when you adopted it, it is evident they were neglected in its previous home.
Submissive Attitude – You may discover that some dogs are more submissive than others. An overly submissive dog may be showing signs of previous abuse. This is because they are worried you may cause them harm, which causes them to be always on their best behavior.
Anxiety – Dogs suffer from anxiety just as humans do. Signs to look out for include excessive panting, barking, or pacing. While you may not know what has happened to your dog in the past, you can find ways to relieve their suffering and help make them feel more comfortable.
Fear or Aggression – Dogs may become fearful and show aggression in certain situations. Dogs that have been abused are usually afraid of everything and may show aggression at random times.
