Spotlight Breed: Norwich Terrier
Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week. This article will feature a fun and unique dog breed from around the globe! We are excited to spotlight the Norwich Terrier today. The Norwich Terrier was named for their hometown in England. The term “big dog in a small package” fits perfectly for this breed. They are just about 10 inches tall! The Norwich Terrier is one of the smallest working terriers. They were sought as ratters (a dog used to hunt rats) and did a good job!
Let’s talk about the personality of the Norwich Terrier. They are very active and intelligent. One thing you should know about the breed is that they do not make good kennel dogs. They prefer to be with their guardians. They show high interest in everything their guardian does. They are typical terriers as they possess a lot of energy and are capable of mischief! You might want to keep a close eye out on this breed.
Norwich Terriers love to spend a lot of time with people. They tolerate other dogs and cats well if they are raised with them. Otherwise, a Norwich Terrier may need obedience and socialization training to do well around other animals. The breed is an excellent watchdog but a poor guard dog due to their size. The Norwich Terrier will bark excessively if not properly trained.
Easy-to-train dogs such as the Norwich Terrier are more adept at quickly forming an association between a prompt, an action, and a consequence. The breed has no problem letting you know how intelligent they are! You may need to incorporate positive reinforcement into your training sessions as the Norwich Terrier enjoys being rewarded for their work. Keep in mind that this breed has a high wanderlust potential. If they see something that they want, they will go after it! After all, they were taught to hunt rats.
Are you looking for a smaller active dog breed that loves to be around people? If so, the Norwich Terrier may be for you! We will leave you with our favorite quote about the breed: “Life is MERRIER with a NORWICH TERRIER!!!”
