Backyard Dangers for Dogs

Backyard Dangers for Dogs

Most dogs love to have the freedom of playing and relaxing outside. However, there are dangers that you need to be aware of. By having a solid plan in place for your dog’s outdoor adventure, you will keep them safe and sound. Below is a list of some of the most common dangers your four-legged friend may experience in the backyard.

Fruit & Vegetable Gardens – Some of the most common garden fruit and vegetable plants can be toxic to dogs. Keep an eye out for tomato plants, rhubarb, onions, and garlic.

Toxic Plants – You must be aware of the types of toxic plants for dogs. Thankfully, the ASPCA lists more than 400 toxic plants and weeds for dogs. Foxglove, lily of the valley, and oleander are among the backyard plants that are poisonous to dogs.

Mushrooms – Wild mushrooms can poison your dog. Symptoms include liver failure, acute kidney injury, and death.

Wild Animals – Wild animals such as coyotes, rats, bears, and squirrels can be dangerous to dogs if they meet face-to-face in your yard. Do not leave your pet unsupervised if you live in an area with dangerous wildlife. Other things to watch out for are spiders, stinging insects, and snakes.

Worms – Any dog that spends a lot of time outdoors is at risk for parasites. Some parasites your dog may encounter outdoors include whipworms, hookworms, heartworms, roundworms, and tapeworms. The good news is that preventative measures and parasite protection will help prevent worms.

Ticks & Fleas – Monthly prescription tick and flea medication will help limit exposure to ticks and fleas.

Poisons – Pesticides and dogs are a dangerous combination. All toxic items should be locked in a cabinet. Furthermore, it would be best if you resorted to non-poison pest control methods. If your dog is exposed to poisons, please call Poison Control and take them to the veterinarian immediately.

Time in the backyard should be fun for you and your dog. The best thing you can do as a pet owner is to be proactive to ensure your dog’s safety.
