Why Do Dogs Love the Smell of Our Clothes?
One of dogs’ most common behavioral traits is sniffing their owner’s clothes. Dogs are intelligent, and their strong sense of smell gives them a way to go into “investigation” mode. This is a way for them to communicate and get information about the world. There are many reasons dogs sniff clothing, which will be outlined below.
They want to know where you have been. We all know that dogs are curious animals. When you come back from a long day away from the house, dogs search for information about where you have been all day. Your clothes will absorb smells no matter where you are during the day. Your dog is curious!
They missed you. Your dog may like to sniff clothes because it is a smell that they are familiar with. Our four-legged friends may find comfort in the smell of our clothes. Sniffing you when you get back home gives them a sense of safety. Some owners leave a t-shirt with their dogs when they are away from home to find comfort in knowing that their owners will return home.
They smell other dogs. Dogs may be sniffing your clothes to try and pick up the scent of another animal or dog. This is the best way for dogs to get information about other dogs. Your dog will be able to tell if you’ve been around another dog!
As we mentioned before, dogs sniffing clothes is normal behavior that you do not need to be alarmed by. You do not need to try and stop it unless it is becoming excessive. Keep in mind that sniffing surroundings is a way for dogs to communicate and get to know more about the world that they live in!
