My Dog is Itching! Apple Cider Vinegar for the Win!
Do you have an itchy dog, or do they suffer from certain skin conditions? This may be a helpful article for you! Before we get into our recommendations about the mighty apple cider vinegar (ACV), please note that you should always consult your veterinarian before trying anything new on your dog.
I guess it would be helpful to know what apple cider vinegar is in the first place. It is very similar to white vinegar. However, the major difference is made through the process of fermenting apples. The result of the fermentation process is a substance that is full of iron, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and essential vitamins and minerals. We call this the mighty ACV because it can do all sorts of things like control or prevent yeast overgrowth, fleas, ticks, and itchiness.
You may be wondering how you can use apple cider vinegar for itchy dogs. Please follow our two recommendations below.
- Pour it on. Think of an apple cider vinegar bath for your dog. This method will save you the most time, but it also consumes more product in the long run. What you will need to do is mix up the ACV and water in a big jar. After your dog’s regular shampoo, pour it from head to tail in slow-motion so you get it to thoroughly cover your dog.
- Spritz and rub. Grab a spray bottle and spritz your dog with the ACV mixture. Next, rub it down through their fur so it gets into the skin. Depending on the breed and the amount of fur that they have, you may want to work in sections using your hand to shift the fur away from the skin. Caution! If your dog has any open wounds, the apple cider vinegar stings. You want to avoid this at all costs.
Another option with the spray bottle is to keep it hands for when you notice your dog chewing or licking their feet. It will help soothe the area and deter any further chewing. Apple cider vinegar has many benefits, but at the end of the day, you know your dog best. Do what is best for you and your pup!
