Tips to Keep Your Dog Warm in the Winter

There is a lot to prepare for when it comes to winter weather. Just like humans are affected by the cold, dogs are too. Below are a few simple measures you can take to make sure that your four-legged friend stays warm, happy, and healthy throughout the winter months.

Limit time outside. Did you know that dogs can suffer from frostbite too? Think about how delicate their earflaps, tail tips, and paws are. In extreme cold, it is a good idea to keep your dog inside, except for the heavy-coated northern breeds that thrive in low temperatures.

Bundle up! We are aware that most dogs have their own coat, but you wouldn’t want to go out in a blizzard in a light spring jacket. Do your part to ensure that small, delicate, short-haired dogs have an appropriate winter wardrobe. Consider a sturdy winter coat or a fitted sweater.

Don’t forget about age. Age is more than a number where climate is concerned. Like humans, very young and old dogs have a hard time regulating body temperature. Keep the puppies and older dogs indoors as much as possible during the winter season.

Protect the paws! Different retailers offer dog boots or paw protectors that work well to keep your pup’s feet safe. If your dog is not wearing boots, always do your best to avoid those harsh winter salts as they can cause issues with your dog’s paws. Make sure that you take the time to wash off your dog’s feet as soon as they come in from the cold. Some dogs may need a paw balm or moisturizer for dry skin.

Heated dog beds. Did you know that there was such a thing? A heated dog bed can be a great option for dogs that tend to get chilly. Look for one that has an automatic shut-off.

Winter weather can be unpredictable. If you follow our tips mentioned above, then you will be ahead of the game to ensure that your dog is warm during the winter months.
