Dog Parks – A Guide of What to Look For 

There are many benefits of taking your four-legged friend to the dog park.  Your dog will not only get plenty of exercise, but they will make new friends along the way!  Allowing your dog to roam free without a leash can provide many mental and physical benefits.  This article will explain more about dog parks, what you should expect, and some common things to look for while you are there.

Dog parks were originally designed to give dogs the freedom to play amongst each other in a fenced in area.  This area is typically separate from a picnic or children’s playing area.  You may expect different things at a dog park depending on when you decide to go.  The best thing that you can do at first is to take your dog when it is a bit quieter.  That way, they can get acquainted with the area without any other distractions.

There are several things that you should look for when you visit a dog park.  Please see our list below!

Fencing – It doesn’t matter if your dog is prone to run away or not.  It’s always safe to choose a dog park with a fence.  This will prevent your dog from running into traffic when you least expect it.

No Broken Glass or Toxic Objects – Unfortunately, we cannot always guarantee that a park is being used by the right people.  Be sure to look around and identify any broken glass or toxic items which may be harmful to your pup.

Waste Bins – Your dog may need to go potty while they are at the dog park.  Ensure that there are waste bins to properly discard waste into.

Friendly Faces – It is important to surround yourself and your dogs with friendly faces.  Make sure that the people and dogs who are using the dog park are having a good time and welcoming you with open arms.

Dog parks can be amazing.  They allow your dog to have fun without limits and you can have a peace of mind knowing that they will not run away.  We recommend that you try out multiple dog parks while getting a feel for how your dog is reacting to each of them.  You will be able to determine a favorite hot spot for you and your pup!
