Our spotlight breed of the week is the German Shepherd. If we had to choose three words to sum up this breed, we would select hard-working, intelligent, and unique. However, there is much more to learn, so please continue reading!

Let’s start with the history of the German Shepherd. The breed originated in Germany and came with many unique characteristics. Many people assume that a German Shepherd has a standoffish attitude, but their physique plays into this notion. The average German Shepherd can weigh between 70-95 pounds and stand around two feet tall at the shoulder.

It is simple to spot a German Shepherd because of its bushy tails and double-thick coats. A fun fact about the breed is that it can be one of 11 colors, with black and white being the most popular. The German Shepherd has a unique personality. The breed can be a caretaker or a police officer. The loyalty of the breed ranks high amongst other breeds. They take pride in protecting whom they care about.

You shouldn’t have many issues training a German Shepherd. The breed is intelligent and has no problem showing you what they are capable of! They can quickly establish an association between a prompt, action, and consequence. You may need to incorporate positive reinforcement into training sessions because the German Shepherd loves to be rewarded for a job well done!
