Spotlight Breed Pug

Spotlight Breed: Pug

One of the many reasons why the doggie world is so interesting is that there are so many breeds!  Just like humans, each breed has its own unique personality.  Check back every week where we will feature a new and exciting breed!  The Spotlight Breed this week is the Pug!

The pug’s motto is the Latin phrase, “multum in parvo” which means a lot in a little.  Pugs come in three colors: silver or apricot-fawn with a black face mask, or all black.  You can normally decipher a Pug’s emotion by the look on their faces – surprised, happy or even curious!  Many people claim that the Pug is the ideal house dog because they are happy in any environment.

Given the opportunity, a Pug will happily spend much of the day lounging around.  They also LOVE to eat which makes obesity a high possibility.  However, the Pug can be playful and lively.  Owners can keep the breed fit with daily exercise such as walks or playing fetch in the yard.

Pugs have a rich history with many interesting facts.

  • The Pug is one of the oldest breeds of dog.
  • Authorities agree that the Pug breed is of Chinese origin with some basic similarities to the Pekingese.
  • The Pug was the official dog of the House of Orange in Holland after one of the breeds saved the life of the crown prince.

We will leave you with one of our favorite quotes about Pugs!

“I am your family.  Your best friend.  Now.  Always…Especially when you are eating!”
