Tips on Conditioning a Dog’s Dry Skin

Our four-legged friends may have dry skin for many reasons, ranging from medical conditions and parasitic or bacterial yeast infections to seasonal allergies. In addition, poor grooming, or a lack of grooming, can cause a dog to have dry skin too. The most important thing to do is to work with your veterinarian to determine the underlying cause of dry skin so that you can address it accordingly.

You may be wondering how your dog has dry skin in the first place. If you notice that your dog is constantly chewing at their skin, scratching, or licking, it may have dry skin. Below are some tips on how to condition your dog’s dry skin at home!

Massage your dog. Did you know that massaging your dog will increase blood flow to the skin, providing nutrients to skin tissues? Use a rubber glove to give your dog a deep tissue massage.

Brush your dog often. We recommend brushing your dog daily to help remove debris and improve airflow.

Bathe, bathe, and bathe! It would be best if you made it a goal to bathe your dog once or twice a month. However, avoid washing your dog too much, as excessive exposure to water and soap can cause dry skin.

Use moisturizing bath products. Avoid using human shampoo or conditioner! Be sure to use dog-safe products.

Do not use a blow dryer. Air drying or using a towel is the best option, as a blow dryer can cause the skin to dry up.

You should be able to address your dog’s dry skin if you follow our abovementioned tips. However, as we mentioned at the beginning of this article, dry skin can be caused by seasonal allergies or certain infections. If you still have issues, contact your veterinarian for further assistance.
