Tips for Responsible Dog Ownership

Owning a dog can be one of the best experiences of a lifetime.  However, many people do not realize how much of a responsibility it is.  By being a responsible pet owner, your dog will live a happy and healthy life.  Are you wondering how you can be the best dog parent ever?  We have conducted a list of tips to help you along the way!

  1. Pet proofing.  This is the same concept as baby proofing.  Think about safety locks for kitchen cabinets, power outlet covers, and keeping electrical cords out of reach.  Keep things out of reach by putting them up high, using dog-proof containers, and keeping doors closed.
  2. ID tags.  Many dogs have a wanderlust potential and love to roam.  If your dog runs away and becomes lost, an ID tag may be one of the best ways of finding them.  Be sure to put their name and your cell phone number on the ID tag.
  3. Exercise. Mental and physical stimulation are important aspects of a dog’s life.  The amount of exercise that your dog needs depend on things like breed, level of fitness, and age.  Keep in mind that dogs that don’t get enough exercise will find a way to work off that excess energy, usually in a destructive way.  Talk about a recipe for disaster!
  4. Checkups. Regular visits to the veterinarian can keep your dog healthy.  Vet checkups ensure that your dog is up to date on vaccines and other preventative medications.  Seeing your vet often can also help you detect any diseases in the early stages.
  5. Socialization. This is often overlooked!  Socialized dogs are better able to deal with new circumstances, and vet and grooming appointments are much smoother.  The good thing is that dogs who are properly socialized get along well with other people, animals, and tend to adapt well to new situations.

We hope that you learned a lot from our list.  Being a responsible pet owner allows you and your pet to live life to the fullest!
