The Scoop on Dog Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Have you ever had conjunctivitis (pink eye)? It’s not fun by any means! If you are unfamiliar with pink eye, it is an infection of the conjunctiva, the outermost layer of the eyeball inside the eyelids.

Unfortunately, our four-legged friends can get pink eye too.

Typically, dogs experience this condition in one eye but may contact it in both. You may wonder what causes pink eye. Allergies, viruses, or bacteria can cause it.

It is important to note that dogs can get pink eye from humans! If a member of your family has pink eye, they must take precautions to keep the entire household safe. How can the infected person keep everyone safe? They must wash their hands, sterilize common areas, and avoid contact with the eyes.

The following symptoms may indicate that your four-legged friend has pink eye.

Puffy eyelids

Redness or bloodshot eyes

Discharge

Eyelids sticking together

Pawing at the eyes

Crustiness

Watery eyes

Does your dog have any of the symptoms listed above? If so, they may have pink eye. Treatment is crucial to ensure your dog is on its way to recovery. The best thing you can do is speak with your veterinarian to determine the cause of the pink eye. The vet will most likely prescribe an ointment or antibiotic eye drops if bacteria cause the pink eye. The vet may prescribe a steroid eye drop for viral conjunctivitis to help eliminate the goop. Antihistamines or anti-inflammatory drugs will help with pink eye caused by allergies.
