Dogs do not have nearly as many taste buds compared to humans. However, their sense of smell is way more advanced! Taste deterrents work through your dog’s sense of smell. Once you introduce it to the taste, it will then associate it with the scent. Your dog will have an unpleasant experience related to the smell, and they will avoid it in the future.

Introduce your dog to bitter apply spray by applying a small amount of it on a cotton ball or rag. Place this directly into the dog’s mouth. Pay close attention to your dog’s reaction. It does not like the taste if it drools, shakes its head, or tries to spit. This is a good thing, meaning your dog will try to avoid the taste in the future!

Once you determine that your dog does not like the taste of the deterrent, spray it on anything that you do not want them to chew on. Remember to re-apply the spray daily for two to four weeks until your dog learns to avoid the area. As always, patience and consistency go a long way.
