Spotlight Breed: Estrela Mountain Dog
Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week. This is where we feature a fun and unique dog breed from around the globe! We are excited to spotlight the Estrela Mountain Dog this week. This is a purebred dog coming from the Estrela Mountains in Portugal. If we had to sum up this dog in three words, they would be: proactive, courageous, and loyal. However, there is so much more to learn about this breed, outlined below.
This breed is not suitable for a small home or apartment living. They should be in a living situation that provides a large house and a yard to roam in. The Estrella Mountain Dog needs a lot of mental and physical stimulation, and a small area would be challenging to provide this. One of the best things about this breed is that they can tolerate being alone. As long as they have a place to rest and some things to keep them busy, they will be fine independently.
This breed has an overall friendliness that ranks pretty high compared to others. They are affectionate with their family. One of the best things about the breed is that they love to form strong and loyal bonds with their “pack.” They get along great with children as well. You may discover that they are indifferent toward other dogs and strangers. Like any other breed, it is best to introduce them to socialization training at a young age. This will do an excellent job at preventing any significant issues when they come across other dogs or strangers.
The Estrella Mountain Dog is intelligent. Training should be easier compared to other dog breeds. The breed can form an association between a prompt, an action, and a consequence very quickly. Be aware that the Estrella Mountain Dog may possess a “what’s in it for me?” attitude. This is where you will need to implement positive reinforcement into your training sessions.
Are you looking for a loyal companion who is active and loves a fun adventure? If so, the Estrella Mountain Dog may be for you! We will leave you with our favorite quote about the breed: “My Estrella Mountain Dog thinks I’m perfect. Who cares what anyone else thinks!”
