Spotlight Breed: Carolina Dog
Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week. This is where we feature a fun and unique dog breed from around the globe! We are excited to spotlight the Carolina dog. This is truly a one-of-a-kind breed! Let us explain why.
The Carolina dog emerged from the Southeastern U.S. swamp and into the dog scene in the 1970s. What makes this breed so interesting is that it is not uncommon for you to find them roaming in the Georgia and Carolina woods today. Evidence shows that these dogs lived alongside indigenous people. With a dedicated handler and a home in a rural area, a Carolina dog can make a loyal companion.
When a Carolina dog dashes by, many people may think that they spotted an Australian dingo. However, the resemblance between the two is so strong that Carolina dogs are often called the Carolina dingo or American dingo. The Carolina is medium in frame and can be yellow, red, white, black, or black and tan. One of the most defining characteristics of the breed are their ears. They are large and stand very tall.
Carolina temperaments tend to be shy and curious. This means that early socialization and obedience trailing are vital for a Carolina puppy to grow into a well-adjusted adult. Carolina dogs have a pack mentality and tend to be very loyal to their humans. They love outdoor activities that stimulate the mind and body.
Because of their extensive history as wild “swamp” dogs, Carolina dogs prefer the wilderness over an urban or suburban home. Instead of walks through the neighborhood, these dogs prefer adventures in the woods. You need to ensure that they are involved in long, daily hikes where they have plenty of opportunity to sniff around! It is important that you are an active person if you would like to adopt a Carolina. If you are looking for a fun, loyal, and adventurous dog, then the Carolina may be the best fit for you!
