Snack Bag Suffocation in Pets
Let’s say you are snacking on your favorite bag of potato chips. You step away from the couch for a second to do something else. You return and notice your dog’s head is in the chip bag. It is more common than you think! Suffocation from snack, food storage, and other plastic bags is a threat to our four-legged friends. Thankfully, it can be prevented. This article will discuss the dangers of snack bags and what you can do to avoid suffocation.
Bags that contain food are dangerous because pets can smell the food. They are most likely to find the bags when they are left on the counter, floor, coffee table, or even in the trash. Bags are everywhere in our homes! The dangerous thing about this is that pets can suffocate in less than five minutes when their heads become stuck in the bag. Unfortunately, many pets will panic when they cannot figure out how to get their head out of the bag. Increased breathing will cause the bag to collapse and shrink around the pet’s nose and mouth.
Prevention is key. Below are some ways you can prevent your pet from suffocating inside a plastic bag:
- Before throwing a snack bag away, cut the sides of the bag open or cut it into pieces. A bag without sides cannot seal around a pet’s nose and mouth.
- Do not leave snack backs unattended around the house. Throw snack, cereal, or other plastic bags into the trash immediately after finishing the snack.
- Place your trash bin in a secure location away from your pet. We recommend a trash bin with a lid that your pet cannot open!
- Do not forget about the children. Keep an eye out for kids; they may forget and leave bags behind.
