Moving with Dogs 101

Are you all packed up and ready to move to a new house? Moving is a stressful experience, and the same applies to our four-legged friends. Pets get confused about what is going on, and there are many emotions that they experience. Anxiety and depression may occur as the dog feels lost. The good news is that you can lessen some of these negative emotions by being proactive. We are here to help!

You must be proactive in preparing your dog for significant change. Routines are essential to dogs and will be altered during the moving process. You must ensure your dog that everything will be okay. Remember that dogs pick up on emotions. If you are stressed and show it, your four-legged friend will pick up on it, making them more anxious.

You will need to plan according to the type of move that you are making. Are you moving across town or to a different state? You may be moving abroad! Dogs must always be microchipped and have proper identification on them. Packing up boxes around your dog will bring many emotions. Your dog will be confused and wonder what’s happening with everything they see daily! We recommend assembling tape boxes several days before moving so your dog gets used to their home’s new look and sound.

Now you are ready for the big move! Place your dog in the car last, regardless of where you go. Your four-legged friend will be anxious during the trip, so do your best to make time for potty breaks and walks. You have arrived at your new home, and it’s time for everyone to get acquainted with the new surroundings. It will take a few days to unpack and get everything in order. After that, you can work on establishing a solid routine for you and your dog. Things will be back to normal in no time!
