Dogs & Vacuum Cleaners

Did you know that vacuum cleaners may be traumatic to our four-legged friends? There may be a variety of emotions that your dog experiences when coming into contact with a vacuum cleaner. They may run away in fear! Below is some insight on why dogs are scared of vacuums and what you can do about it.

Let’s face the facts. Vacuums are big, disruptive, and noisy. We aren’t just referring to the big vacuum cleaners either. Do not forget about the smaller robotic vacuums as well! All types of vacs can be loud to dogs. In addition, vacuum cleaners can let off a confusing odor. You have to realize that it is picking up many things such as pet dander, dust, pollens, dirt, etc. This can cause your dog’s sense of smell to go crazy!

There are a few things that you can try to help your dog overcome their fear of vacuums. The first thing you will need to focus on is establishing a positive association. Have a friend or family member help you. Stand by your dog with a few treats in your hand. Have your helper turn on the vacuum cleaner and move closer to you as time goes by. Give your dogs treats to let them know that the vacuum is not bad.

Pay close attention to your dog to ensure that the noise of the vacuum has not derailed your progress. You may run into issues of your dog not accepting treats when the vacuum cleaner is turned on. If this is the case, move farther away or shut the door when it is turned on.

The goal is for your dog to remain calm while using the vacuum. Keep in mind that it may take several training sessions before you and your dog get to that point. Do not get discouraged! As always, patience and consistency go a long way. Your dog will eventually realize that the vacuum is not a bad thing.
