Dogs & Pesticides
Pesticides are substances that are meant to control pests. These include herbicide, piscicide, bactericide, and insect repellent, to name a few. Unfortunately, our dogs suffer even more exposure because they are lower to the ground. The key to minimizing the damage from pesticides is to limit your dog’s exposure and help them detoxify the harmful products from their body. Below are a few tips to help your dog overcome toxic pesticide overload.
Milk Thistle – The good thing about milk thistle is that it has been safely used for years to help the liver detoxify and repair itself. The typical recommended amount to feed is ¼ tsp per 20 pounds. You can also add herbs such as dandelion, burdock, red clover, and turmeric to help address pesticide toxicity.
Probiotics – A properly functioning gut will boost your dog’s immune system and help clear ingested toxins out of their system. Opt for soil-based probiotics instead of dairy-based products.
Nutrition – The faster food moves through the digestive tract, the less likely it is for toxins to be absorbed into the body. Keep in mind that kibble and carbohydrate diets require a change in the pH in your dog’s stomach and slow digestion down.
Exercise – The benefit of regular exercise is that it will increase blood flow through your dog’s body and help expel toxins.
Keeping your dog healthy involves more than just a healthy diet. Please do your part as a pet parent and limit their exposure to pesticides. Helping your four-legged friend detox regularly will help decrease their toxin load and lessen the harmful effects of pesticide exposure.
